Holland, Vice-Admiral Lancelot

   Holland was, appointed Commander of HMS Hood on 8 May 1941. He led the battlecruiser, the world’s largest warship, in an attempt to intercept the Bismarck and Prinz Eugen on 24 May. They were sighted in the Denmark Strait and made contact at 0052. The ships opened fire and the Germans concentrated their fire on the Hood and although she managed to retaliate, a salvo from the Prinz Eugen started a fire. At 0600 the Hood blew up and sank. Holland was lost with his crew of 1400: only three survived.
